1/26/2024 0 Comments World record for chimpanzee test![]() "One aspect of that might be due to those female coalitions, that help the females to maintain reproductive autonomy." "We don't see sexual coercion in bonobos, which is a common phenomenon in chimpanzees," said Surbeck. Intriguingly, females, both within and from different groups, were found to form coalitions - sometimes to chase an individual from a feeding tree, at other times to prevent a coercive sexual advance from a male. The positive interactions occurred despite a low level of genetic relatedness between the groups, and despite the fact that reciprocity - such as paying back a gift of fruit - often took place much later, in future encounters. These individuals tended to connect with similar "pro-social" bonobos from the other group, creating a system of mutual benefit, or "reciprocal altruism." The team found that cooperation between the groups was driven largely by a select few who were more helpful within their own group. "There are those that are more introverts, extroverts, there are those that are more pro-social than others." "Every individual is different," said Samuni. Samuni and Surbeck focused on two small bonobo groups of 11 and 20 adults respectively, and found to their surprise they spent 20% of their total time together - feeding, resting, traveling and more. is try to run away from you," Surbeck told AFP, explaining it took a long time for the bonobos to overcome their inherent fears of humans and behave normally.ĭays began at 4am and involved researchers trekking through the dark forest until they reached bonobo nests, then waiting for sunrise so they could follow the apes throughout the day, aided by indigenous Mongandu trackers. In the new paper, Samuni teamed up with Martin Surbeck, a professor at Harvard who founded the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve, to carry out a long-term study over two years. Female coalitions against sexual aggression. With research on chimps dominating the literature, some scientists assumed hostility against outsiders was innate to human nature - something we had perhaps trained ourselves to get past by inventing new social norms, even as that trait lurked deep inside. That's because bonobos, an endangered species, are notoriously difficult to study in their natural habitat - and they live only in remote regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lead author Liran Samuni of the German Primate Center in Gottingen told AFP that studying the primates offered a "window into our past," possibly signaling an evolutionary basis for how our own species began wider-scale collaborative endeavors.īonobos (Pan paniscus) are our closest living relatives, alongside chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and the two species are also very closely related to each other.īut while encounters between chimpanzee groups are inherently hostile and often result in lethal violence, interactions between bonobo parties had not been as well examined. WASHINGTON - Human society is founded on our ability to cooperate with others beyond our immediate family and social groups.Īnd according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science, we are not alone: bonobos team up with outsiders too, in everything from grooming to food sharing, even forming alliances against sexual aggressors. Which airline provides the best business class amenities in Paris?.Even more, they cost the same to fly, thanks partly to upturned wing tips that increase fuel efficiency.Īll of this means JetBlue's new planes could welcome higher margins and potentially bigger profits - even if Mint fails to take off. So despite Mint's demand on space, there are still nine additional seats in total on the new planes. And the new planes are actually 23 feet longer than their predecessors, the Airbus A320s. New thinner seats have been trimmed by inches, carving out more space to pack in more passengers without sacrificing legroom. The new Airbus jets don't just don a new business class, but a completely overhauled core class as well. Mint is part of a much bigger three-year design overhaul. That's because premium seats typically take up precious space - the equivalent of two to three economy class ones.īut Perry says those fears are unwarranted. I just question the return that they're able to generate at $599."ĭeNardi thinks prices will ultimately have to rise for JetBlue to see a meaningful return on its new investment. "But at this price point it's going to be very good from a bookings perspective. "I think that JetBlue is going to struggle to steal away the corporate traveler that's loyal from a frequent flier perspective to Delta or United," says Joseph DeNardi, an associate analyst at Stifel Nicolaus who covers airlines. The three-figure fares undoubtedly help - but analysts say those lower prices could also be the biggest risk associated with the new service. Perry says early bookings for Mint are already sold out. "In order to be in the premium-class game, you simply have to have a product that's great." A comparable business-class ticket on another airline could run as high as $2,000. Fares range from $599 to $999, each way - still well below bigger competitors' rates. "But also, we feel that the prices are extremely high and the products are relatively average right now, so there was a great opportunity for JetBlue to come in and do what it does best, which is to over serve the under served." In other words, he adds, offer a better product at a lower price point. "We picked these markets because they are the biggest markets in the country for premium product such as the Mint experience," said Jamie Perry, director of product development at JetBlue. JetBlue proudly claims it will be the only carrier to offer these suites on domestic flights. Mint has required a completely new design - hence the new Airbus A321s - to incorporate the 16 lie-flat seats, four of which are "suites" with doors. Until now, the egalitarian carrier has always offered a single cabin, equipped only with the option for more spacious seats at an additional fee. It's the first time JetBlue, perhaps best-known for carting North Easterners to Florida and the Caribbean, has ever peddled a second tier of service on its planes. Training offers similar but entirely optional granularity, giving you the option to hand this over wholesale to your coaching staff. It offers a wealth of tactical options, not just in terms of formations, but at a more granular and individual player level, allowing you to decide if your central defenders are no-nonsense stoppers or ball-playing liberos, for example. Nevertheless, at its core, this is everything you would expect and want a Football Manager game to be. This is somehow worse though, as there seems to be some weird acceleration applied to the cursor that sees it ramp up from too slow to too quick, making it a frustrating means of navigation. In fact, there is an option to mimic the PC experience more closely by pressing in the left stick to switch to an on-screen cursor. It is pretty much the only way Sports Interactive could have done it to make it even remotely usable, and first-time players will find it perfectly sensible and acceptable, but it makes the whole thing substantially clunkier than it is with a keyboard and mouse. The left analogue stick is used to flick you between those different windows, with the d-pad then used to navigate within that window and the face buttons serving as contextual selection buttons. In an attempt to make the interface easier to navigate using a controller, each distinct section on the screen is treated essentially as its own window. Each facet of the game – from matchday preparations to contract negotiations to scouting and everything else in between – comes complete with a short but sufficiently detailed tutorial that I would absolutely recommend you’d sit through. Thankfully, Sports Interactive haven’t taken the From Software route of leaving you to figure all of this out by yourself. There is a quite frankly dizzying amount of information to take in and pore over, even for a slimline version of the full fat version you’ll find on PC. If you’re a console-only gamer and, therefore, this is your first time playing a Football Manager game in at least 13 years – or, indeed, this is your first time playing a football management game at all – then Football Manager 2021 is still likely to seem exceptionally daunting. However, don’t think this means that it’s going to be a cake walk. ![]() By doing so, it’s an easier game to get into and, therefore, generally much better suited to a console. A port of their streamlined spinoff FM Touch series, Football Manager 2021 Xbox Edition aims to deliver a faster and more accessible experience than that provided by its full-fat brethren on PC by focussing primarily on the three Ts – tactics, transfers and training. 1/26/2024 0 Comments Derry girls![]() Even as hilarity ensues, the episode is imbued with an existential aura this may be the last time these friends ever get up to no good while worrying about grades. Read: The teen dramas that reject modernity By evading endings and repeating tropes, all of these shows peddle the same strange lie-that adolescence can last forever. Even the most recent season of Sex Education has begun to make me wonder when Otis, Maeve, and Eric will graduate, both from school and from our screens. How many times could Chuck and Blair come together and fall apart? Though the cast changed every two seasons, Skins still circled teenage anomie, unexpected pregnancy, and excessive drug use like a myopic moth to a flame. The results were repetitive and insular stories. But these shows kept the camera going even as the characters aged out of adolescence. We have tests and cameras that can verify middle ear fluid and guide treatment in a timely manner.Īdult risk factors for this condition include GE reflux, smoking, allergies, upper respiratory infections, immune system suppression (as with diabetes, chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS), sinusitis, enlarged tonsils/adenoids, ruptured eardrum and family history. It does not need to be a lasting problem. Key symptoms include sudden reduction in hearing, ear pain and often drainage. Middle ear fluid or infection in young children can disrupt learning at this critical age for language learning. Tubes may be inserted in chronic cases and are very common. Children’s Eustachian tubes are more horizontal and do not drain easily. Foul smelling drainage is a sign of a middle ear infection. There can be a milky white fluid in the middle ear space (“glue ear”) than can cause intense pain and even rupture the drum. Two major risk factors include smoking among family members and spending time in day care centers. Three out of four children can expect to have at least one episode by age three. According to the National Institutes of Health, otitis media is the leading cause for physician visits and antibiotic use for children five years old and younger. It should be correctly diagnosed and treated swiftly. Symptoms most seen in adults include drainage, ear pain, recent decrease in hearing, ear fullness sensations, recent dizziness or balance difficulty, fever (if there is an infection), and even pain, especially in children. The tympanic membrane (eardrum) is drawn backwards from negative pressure, and yellow watery fluid may be present, having been drawn from the tissues lining the middle ear cavity. This may be the result of Eustachian tube dysfunction, in which the middle ear space cannot drain to the throat adequately, often due to congestion in the tube itself. Often the fluid trapped behind adults’ eardrums is serious and is typically painless. Patients often report their primary physician suspected “fluid in the ears”. This may or may not be associated with an infection. Over 5 million cases of acute Otitis Media are reported annually in the US.Īdults can find themselves with middle ear fluid as well. ![]() Pain may increase until the eardrum ruptures from fluid pressure. Children are known to be more prone to this condition due to their more horizontal Eustachian tubes and propensity for harvesting infections in general. Many pediatrician visits result in treatment for otitis media, which, in children, often presents as “glue ear” and may be accompanied by pain, fever and reduced hearing. Most people are aware that middle ear infections are very common in young children. 1/25/2024 0 Comments Sunday tickey u![]() * Live primetime regular season or postseason games on your phone or tablet. * Live regular season or postseason games on your phone or tablet. * Live out-of-market pre-season games across all devices. Does verisimilitude get a bum rap in Plato's book because representation is an artifact solely of the Mental World, and therefore can keep us from properly apprehending the Platonic realm? Yes of course, this is the point of the Allegory of the Cave. , it merely steers us toward Truth and Beauty, on a path that promises to be shorn as much as possible of mimesis. It does seem to me that it's not just the Truth that you find in this world the Platonic Absolute which is relevant in this picture, that these others that the quality of Beauty which has to do with these physical laws that describe the world in the incredible way.and Morality, which has to do with Mentalityĭoes abstract art describe this Platonic tripartite of tripartite mysterious worlds? Not necessarily (and it's not that devotees of abstraction always make this promise, see Chris Martin's recent Everything is Finished Nothing is Dead: An Article About Abstract Painting) so the idea of morality is very much tied up with this side of the picture. And this is clearly tied up with mentality, because if you want to talk about something, some act being good in some sense, it usually refers to animate creatures, human beings, not just human beings certainly. The final thing, which in fact is what Plato regarded the most highly, which was the morality or The Good. ![]() You see, this world has to do with truth, this has to do with absolute truth, the absolute truth that you find in mathematics, which has a sort of more absolute nature that you tend to find in other areas, but there are these other Platonic qualities, not necessarily the Truth, which is indicated by this part but Beauty, particularly the beauty that one finds in physical laws or how mathematics applies to it, there is often beauty which is mathematical, but so often, more than not, you find that the -laws that apply to the world involve, in a deep way, this Beauty.
